Each year, there are a few prom dress lines that we get particularly excited about. 2020 is no different, as perennial fashion powerhouse Jovani has delivered yet another outstanding fashion line. While it may seem like prom season is in the distant future, our Roo Girls know that now is the time to begin your quest for the perfect dress. The hottest styles sell out quickly and, while you may not have yet secured a date for the special event, locking down the perfect prom dress should be priority number one. After all, prom will be one of the most memorable moments of your teenage years. With that idea in mind, Rissy Roo's would like to share with you some of our favorite styles and trends from this year's Jovani prom dress line.
We might as well start where it all began. For many years, traditional ball gowns were not just a choice for prom girls, but the only choice. In 2020, while many more style options will be available, many potential prom queens will still opt for the timeless princess look to fulfill their fairytale evening. Layers upon layers of tulle will typically permeate the wide full skirts of these enchanting ball gowns. While this may be a classic look, many of these gowns have been given some modern touches, such as pockets for gum, lipstick, or other essentials, should you choose not to carry a clutch.
One style we are particularly infatuated with this year is Jovani 55634. This spectacular ball gown features a deep plunging v-neckline. Stunning floral appliques flow effortlessly through the garment from the shoulders, through the bodice, and trail off throughout the full tulle skirt. In addition to the navy/black combo we've featured (pictured right), this style comes in a myriad of other spectacular combos and colors including off white/light blue, off white/lilac, off white/yellow, champagne, off white/blush, off white/off white, red, and teal.
Pastels are once again en vogue and, if you're really going all out for the prom princess look, there's no better way to go. One such style we've fallen in love with for this coming season is Jovani 1310. This jaw-dropping ball gown is available in a charming off white/lilac combo that is sure to be a showstopper at this year's prom. Thin spaghetti straps lead to a v-neck bodice featuring alluring illusion cutouts and a mesmerizing pattern that continues in an asymmetrical manner through the full tulle skirt. Continue reading →

Bar and Bat Mitzvahs are a very special celebration time for a family. It's the celebration of the coming of age for young boys and girls, so are certainly the best of occasions to rock a fun party dress!
Jessi Kaplan, from South Florida, recently celebrated her Bat Mitzvah, and she did so in style. She rocked two gorgeous looks from RissyRoos.com to celebrate the special day: one for the Bat Mitzvah service and one for the party. Jessi's not the only gal of honor who rocked a Rissy Roo's dress at her Bat Mizvah, though - her mom, Randee, did, too! Check out what Jessie and Randee wore to celebrate the special day, and what Randee had to say about the looks, below.
"I just wanted to thank you so much again for all of your help with the dresses for Jessi’s Bat Mitzvah! If you get an influx of South Floridians ordering Bat Mitzvah dresses for kids and moms now, you’ll know why! I know a lot of people and everyone has been asking me where I got our dresses! Thanks again for everything!
Sherri Hill 51521 features a sheer lace bodice, with a sweetheart neckline, opaque bra cups, lace tank straps, and an open square back, with a zipper closure. The beautiful short a-line skirt features an opaque underlay and scalloped hem. To top it all off, the entire dress is sprinkled with delicate jewels.
Sherri Hill 51521 was the perfect choice for a glamorous look that's still conservative enough for a Bat Mitzvah service. Plus, the gold of the Sherri Hill dress perfectly matched Jessi's talit.
When it was time to celebrate the special day during Jessi's Bat Mitzvah party, Jessi went full-on glam! She wore JVN by Jovani style JVN54472, a shimmering two-piece party dress.
Jovani JVN54472 is a colorful show-stopper dress that is covered in dazzling sequins and accented with a floral embroidered pattern on the crop top and on the hip of the skirt. The bodice has two on-trend features: a high neck and an open back. Our favorite part of this dress, though, is another trend - the ombre effect of sequins that gives it such a stand-out look!
How cute are the pink knee-high socks that Jessi wore for her party? The socks are such a fun (and comfortable) touch!
Jessi's mom, Randee, was dressed to impress for the Bat Mitzvah party, too. Randee also wore a Jovani dress to the party. She wore Jovani style 58646, but with a twist - she cut the floor-length gown to be a short dress! Check out the dress on our website to see it as a floor-length gown. It's a perfect choice for prom!
Jovani 58646 blossoms with a floral print, made entirely of sequins, that couldn't be more gorgeous. The halter has a deep plunge neckline and halter straps, and the square back has lace-up corset details and a tie closure.
We love that Randee topped off her look with such fun floral high heels - it was the perfect touch to the Jovani dress!
We're so glad to hear that Jessi and Randee had such a fun time at Jessi's Bat Mizvah and loved their dresses! Congratulations, and we hope you remember this special day for many, many years to come, Jessi!
With the year coming to a close, another 2017 awards ceremony is now but memory. The 45th Annual American Music Awards took place on November 19, 2017 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. It was hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross.
With the 2017 AMAs being the last awards show of the year, the pressure was on for celebrities to make best dressed lists. Outfits had to be on-point and paired perfectly with accessories, hair, and makeup. With the pressure so high, celebs either end up succeeding with flying colors or totally missing the mark. See our picks for best and worst dressed below, and even how you can snag those best dressed styles yourself!
Best Dressed at the 2017 AMAs
Tracee Ellis Ross
With Tracee Ellis Ross hosting the event, of course she is number one on our AMAs Best Dressed list. Our favorite look of hers for the night was the gorgeous burgundy sequined gown she wore on the red carpet.
Grab Tracee's AMAs style with Primavera 9713, a glamorous sequined gown that comes in burgundy just like her dress. This magnificent fitted gown is covered in a lively sequin print, from start to finish. Our favorite part of this dress has to be the mesmerizing illusion cutouts on the back of the dress. Click the link above to view it on our website!
Corrine Foxx is taking the fashion scene head-on this year! If you haven't heard this name yet, she is actor Jamie Foxx's daughter. Earlier this year, she walked the Sherri Hill runway to show off the designer's new Spring/Summer 2018 collection. Now, she's walking award show red carpets... right next to her big-time celebrity dad, of course.
Do you recognize the jumpsuit she's wearing? If so, that's because she's rocking another one of your favorite dress designers: Jovani! The halter jersey jumpsuit she's wearing is Jovani 50908. It's a stylish and sexy choice that still oozes with elegance for any event, whether the red carpet or the prom dance floor.
Selena went for full-on rock star at the 2017 American Music Awards. We loved her leather jacket inspired dress, and her brand new blonde hair! The black stilettos and clutch and red lips were the perfect way to finish off her rocker-chic look.
While this is a totally original dress that's hard to duplicate, there are plenty of faux leather dresses you can choose from that are perfect for holiday parties, winter formals, or even prom.
Selena showed off her badass side on the stage, too, debuting her latest single, "Wolves," a collaboration with Marshmellow. Check it out below!
When does Lea Michele not look totally chic? Basically never. She chose a light pink gown that has us so ready for prom season! She kept her makeup and accessories simple to really let the sparkles on her dress stand out. Watch her twirl down the red carpet in her gown in the below video.
Get Lea's AMAs style with Faviana 10006, and off-the-shoulder dress that features a lace bodice and chiffon skirt. It's a soft and sultry look that's sure to have you twirling around the prom dance floor just like Lea down the AMAs red carpet!
Jenna Dewan Tatum
With Channing Tatum by you're side, we're pretty sure there's no way to look bad. Jenna's got a style all her own, though, and she looked so gorgeous at the 2017 AMAs! She wore a sparkly nude color dress and couldn't have looked sexier. She even said on her Instagram account that this dress is one of her favorites ever!
A post shared by Jenna Dewan Tatum (@jennadewan) on
To get Jenna Dewan Tatum's look for prom, go with Jovani 58506. This dress makes for a sexy choice with its all-over sparkles, side cutouts, and open back. It's a look perfect for a black tie New Year's Eve event or prom!
Worst Dressed at the 2017 AMAs
While we love all that sparkles, actress Yara Shahidi has a lot going on with her AMAs look. The combination of collared shirt, dressy shorts, trench coat, and knee-high socks with heels looks more like a totally funky day-out-with-the-girls outfit, rather than a red carpet outfit.
Black dresses are perfect for any event, but there's a little too much going on with Madeleine Petsch's black dress. A black dress is all about classic elegance; keep it simple, rather than trying to fit every trend, like feathers, lace, illusion, deep v-neck, etc, all into one dress.
We love Girl Meets World star Sabrina Carpenter, and she usually has such great style! But, she may have gone a little overboard with taking a cue from the funky styles she wears on Girl Meets World with her AMAs looks. While it's always fun to add a touch of uniqueness to your looks, keep it within limits for semi-formal and formal events.
We're not sure if Julia Michaels is trying to dress up as Lydia in her wedding dress from the Beetlejuice movie, a Christmas present, or a loofa Halloween costume! Either way, while bold red is a totally great color choice, the excessive layers of tulle are a little much.
We love army green, but it may be misplaced at a formal event, especially when paired with a statement belt like on Rene Bargh's AMA dress.
Remember, whether on the best or worst dressed list, there are always style cues you can take and incorporate into your own outfits. So, even if there are certain elements of the worst dressed looks you loved, don't be afraid to incorporate them into your next outfit! After all, the most important thing in dressing up is choosing something you're comfortable and confident in.
Another year has gone by, and a new Miss America has been crowned! Sunday, September 10, 2017 marked the Miss America 2018 pageant, held in our hometown of Atlantic City, NJ. The 91st Miss America crown was given to a first-time state winner. The history-making Miss America is Miss North Dakota, Cara Mund!
Not only is this the first time North Dakota has won the crown, but it's also the first time that a woman from her state has placed in the top five. Cara Mund did an amazing job, from being judged in categories like talent, evening wear, lifestyle, fitness, and their answer to an onstage question. During the talent portion of the pageant, Cara wowed the judges with a jazz dance performance to Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel." Our favorite part of Cara winning the Miss America crown, though, was what she was wearing when crowned. She won in a Jovani dress!
Cara represented North Dakota in a beautiful chic and sophisticated black velvet Jovani gown that featured a unique keyhole detail on both the front and back. It's style 27462, and is available for custom order.
Ninety's fashion has made a huge comeback this year, seeing celebs like Kendall and Kylie Jenner and Gigi Hadid rocking those ever famous 90s style chokers and goth inspired looks. We certainly can't complain, especially since the 1990s seem to be making a comeback in a huge way well beyond fashion. Just yesterday, sequels to 1990s popular movies The Blair Witch Project and Trainspotting were announced, and one of our all-time favorite actresses who we've been waiting patiently to take over the spotlight once again has done just that: Winona Ryder! The popular 1990s actress who was famous for Tim Burton movies like Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice, as well as Girl, Interrupted, is finally back in the limelight in a big way in Netflix's newest sci-fi series Stranger Things.
With the comeback of both Winona and 90s fashion, we wanted to give a fashion flashback to some of the formal outfits that made Winona that 1990s fashion icon she's become known for. After all, as Vice noted in their article "The Timeless Appeal of Winona Ryder, Hollywood's Eternal Outsider," Winona was "the cult face of the 90s." See four of our favorite outfits below, and of course how you can take a cue from them for a perfect fall Homecoming look.
Winona wore that classic goth look in a totally elegant way, wearing a black v-neck dress, a worn-in leather jacket, black hair, and dark red lips. Of course, you can never go wrong with Johnny Depp on your shoulder! In this picture, Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp were at the NATO/ShowWest Convention in Las Vegas, NV in February of 1990. A couple of days ago we announced our 2016 Prom Queen Contest, and now it's time to see more of our Roo Girl's prom pictures and read their prom dress testimonials. Today, the prom testimonial comes from customer Grace Otley. She purchased her dress months ago for prom, so she was all ready to go for her big day, and it finally came last Friday.
Grace sent us her pictures this week, and said:
"Finally got to wear the dress I got from your store a couple of months ago to my prom this past Friday! Was a hit! Thank you, I love the dress!"
Grace looked so gorgeous! She chose the stylish JVN by Jovani JVN33956. It's a sexy two-piece form fitting dress that features a halter crystal embellished top with a sheer panel and a jersey skirt with cascading crystals along the backside. You can see the stunning back of this dress in the picture below, where Grace and her two friends pose to show off the sexy back of their prom looks. Continue reading →
A couple of days ago, we showed you the totally on-trend pantsuits that some of the celebs wore on the 2016 iHeartRadio Music Awards red carpet. As we mentioned in that post, another major music awards ceremony was held on the same day as the iHeartRadio Music Awards: the Academy of Country Music Awards! Of course, the celebs on the ACM Awards red carpet were just as glammed up. While we loved all of the look, there always seems to be one celeb that stands out on the ACM Awards red carpet. Yup, you guessed it: Carrie Underwood.
Carrie knows how to bring Hollywood glam to any event, and she certainly did so yet again at the 2016 Academy of Country Music Awards. She wore a stunning sparkly nude gown that was the perfect compliment to her pretty blonde hair. She made sure to let her beautiful dress do the talking by keeping accessories to a minimum.
